We were looking for a short activity to do in Baden-Württemberg when my partner’s brother suggested visiting a test tower used for testing high-speed elevators.
The tower was 232 meters (761 feet) tall. It reminded me of the Macau Tower, where I once bungee jumped.
He even mentioned we could see the Swiss Alps from the top on a clear day. That sealed the deal for us to visit.
I’ve been to many observation towers around the world, but what stood out about the Rottweil Test Tower was its unique setting.
Instead of towering over a dense city skyline filled with skyscrapers, this tower rises above medieval towns, rolling farmland, and even the Black Forest. It’s a modern innovation set against the charm of an old village.
Later, I found out it’s Germany’s highest public viewing platform! If you’re in the area, here’s everything you need to know about visiting this incredible tower.

What is the Rottweil Test Tower?
The Rottweil Test Tower or TK Elevator Test Tower is a 232-meter (761-foot) high test tower in Rottweil, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
It was built by Thyssenkrupp Elevator from 2014 to 2017 to test and develop next-generation high-speed elevator technology.
Their most innovative project is the MULTI system, the world’s first rope-free elevator. It uses a magnetic levitation (maglev) system that allows the elevator to move both vertically and horizontally.
While primarily a research facility, the tower also became a tourist attraction. It is the highest public observation deck in Germany, and it offers spectacular 360-degree views of Baden-Württemberg.
From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Rottweil’s medieval town, the surrounding countryside, the Black Forest, and even the Swiss Alps on clear days.
