Chiang Mai is famous for its festivals — Songkran (Thai New Year), Loy Krathong (Festival of Lights), and one of my personal favorites, the Chiang Mai Flower Festival.

During my first visit, I accidentally arrived in the city during the festival and was completely unprepared for how massive and magical it would be. I expected a small local celebration. Instead, Chiang Mai transformed into a floral wonderland that felt straight out of a fairytale.

The Chiang Mai Flower Festival is held every year in February, traditionally on the first weekend of the month, celebrating the end of northern Thailand’s cool season.

The parade floats remain on display in the park throughout the weekend, which is great news if you miss the parade itself.

The Chiang Mai Flower Festival is a city-wide celebration showcasing northern Thailand’s natural beauty, agriculture, and Lanna culture.

Throughout the festival weekend, you’ll find:

Several roads around Suan Buak Haad Park are closed during the event, and the entire area turns into a pedestrian-friendly festival zone.

Chiang Mai is often called the “Rose of the North,” and it’s easy to understand why. The surrounding mountains and cooler climate create ideal conditions for growing orchids, roses, tulips, and other tropical flowers.

The Chiang Mai Flower Festival has been held annually since 1977, highlighting the region’s agricultural heritage. Over the decades, it has grown into one of Thailand’s most visually impressive festivals, combining floral artistry with traditional music, dance, and pageantry.

Our Experience at the Chiang Mai Flower Festival

We had just returned from Pai and checked into our hostel in Chiang Mai when our host casually mentioned that the Flower Festival was happening.

We assumed it would be small. We were very wrong.

Roads were blocked, traffic was chaotic, and motorbikes zigzagged through the city with impressive skill. At one point, we stopped on a bridge decorated entirely with hanging flower baskets and thought, “Oh, this must be the festival.”

It wasn’t.

When we finally reached the parade route, we saw the flower floats — towering, intricate structures made entirely of real flowers. It felt surreal. I actually walked up to one and touched it because I couldn’t believe it wasn’t artificial.

At Suan Buak Haad Park, we wandered through fields of vibrant tulips, orchid gardens, and illuminated floral displays. I even video-called my mom (a proud plant lover) to show her everything — she immediately added this festival to her bucket list.

Chiang Mai already had my heart, but the Flower Festival made me fall in love with the city all over again.

During the festival, Suan Buak Haad Park transforms into a floral paradise featuring:

I highly recommend visiting both during the day and at night. The nighttime illuminations completely change the atmosphere and make the park feel magical.

Miss Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2026

Another major attraction is the Miss Chiang Mai Flower Festival.

Contestants:

• Appear on parade floats
• Perform traditional dances
• Showcase talents and cultural knowledge

The winner is announced in the evening, followed by celebrations and live entertainment.

Cultural Performances

In addition to the flowers, the festival celebrates Lanna culture.

Traditional dance troupes, musical ensembles, and hill tribe groups perform on stages around the city, especially in Suan Buak Haad Park. 

Thai Street Food Market

Before and after the parade, you’ll pass dozens of Thai street food stalls near Suan Buak Haad Park.

After the festival, walk 11 minutes to Wua Lai Walking Street Night Market, which conveniently takes place every Saturday night — the same day as the parade.

It’s one of Chiang Mai’s best night markets and the perfect way to end the day.

Tips for Enjoying the Chiang Mai Flower Festival 2026

Arrive early
If you want to see the parade, arrive by 7:00 AM to secure a good viewing spot.

Or arrive late
Skip the crowds and visit Suan Buak Haad Park in the evening when the floats are on display and the lights are on.

Wear comfortable shoes
You’ll walk a lot.

Bring sun protection
Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and water are essential.

Take your time
Over a million flowers are used throughout the festival. Stop, wander, and enjoy it.
